Roy named new sports minister

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced on Friday that he had appointed Democratic Party lawmaker Roy Suryo Notodiprojo as the new youth and sports minister. Roy will fill the vacant post left by Andi Mallarangeng who resigned last month following the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) announcement that he had been named a suspect in a high-profile corruption case. "After receiving input and suggestions from the Vice President and other relevant officials, as well as considering the public's aspirations, I have appointed Roy to serve as the youth and sports minister," Yudhoyono told a press conference at his office. "I think Roy is competent to serve in the position. I have also taken into account his integrity and capacity," he added. Earlier that day, Roy himself told journalists at the presidential office that he had been appointed by the President. “I do not know when I will be inaugurated. I was just asked to prepare,” he said. Speculation on Roy's appointment caused a massive reaction on Thursday, particularly on the Internet, mostly questioning Yudhoyono's decision to choose him. Roy is known as a controversial lawmaker, particularly because of his "self-styled" information technology expertise. The media frequently quoted him commenting on digital issues such as photographs and video tapes depicting sexual activities involving figures that resembled politicians.
